    • Near-Field Systems

      demo1 thumbNear-Field test ranges are typically indoor configurations that occupy a relatively small space. This type of range uses a small RF probe antenna that is scanned over a surface surrounding the test antenna. Range lengths can be very short even to the point to where the probe nearly touches the antenna structure. During the measurement, near-field phase and amplitude information is collected over a discrete matrix of points. This data is then transformed to the far-field using Fourier techniques. The resulting far-field data can then be displayed like other conventional far-field antenna measurements. In addition to obtaining far-field data, back-transforming to the antenna's aperture produces aperture field distribution information. This offers the ability to perform element diagnostics on multi-element phased array antennas. In near-field testing the test antenna is usually aligned to the scanner's coordinate system and then either the probe or the test antenna is moved. In practice it is easier and more cost effective to scan the RF probe over linear axes or the test antenna over angular axes. Three techniques are in common usages:

      • Planar Near-Field Range

        Planar Near-Field Range

        Planar near-field systems provide another means of antenna measurement from which users can choose. In this configuration, the device under test is placed before a planar scanner which accurately measures the field by moving a probe through the two-dimensional plane. Unlike the spherical and cylindrical measurement systems, a planar near-field system only scans one side of the device in a given test. So planar near-field systems are most useful for measuring antennas with highly directional beam patterns.

        The MI-350 Advanced Microwave Measurement Systems includes the basic instruments and software required for high-performance planar near-field measurements. It integrates the MI-3001 workstation and software environment using the MI-3044 Planar Near-Field Analysis software option to command a fast and accurate combination of receiver, source and position control instruments.

      • Spherical Near-Field Range

        Spherical-Near-Field-StackIn contrast to the far-field systems, measurements in a near-field chamber are not restricted by the far-field distance criterion. In a near-field range the entire field across a defined coordinate system is carefully measured. Then, extensive post-processing is used to calculate the far-field effects and extrapolate the measurement results.

        MI Technologies offers a series of positioners, probes and antennas to provide a complete solution for spherical near-field measurements. Primarily this includes the MI-350 Advanced Microwave Measurement System, with the MI-3046 Spherical Near-Field software. The example Spherical Near-Field Measurement System shown provides a number of advantages to users with special measurement needs. The test antenna is scanned in one angular axis and stepped in an orthogonal angular axis while the probe is fixed in space.

        Turn-key Spherical Near-Field Systems can be provided with shielded chambers and absorber products as well as the measurement and positioning equipment. MI Technologies’ program management and system engineering capabilities provide the project management and technical skills needed to insure the success of complex projects.

    • Radar Cross Section (RCS)

      Pt. MuguRadar Cross Section or RCS measurements have become increasingly important to military customers worldwide. RCS is the projected area of a sphere that has the same radar return as the target. The power received by a radar for a target indicates how well the radar can detect or track that target. For this reason, there is an ongoing effort to reduce the RCS of such objects as missiles, ships, tanks and aircraft.

      MI Technologies has designed, constructed and fielded RCS systems for its U.S. and International military customers for many years. The MI-350 Advanced Microwave Measurement System, together with its MI-3001 Data Acquisition and Analysis Workstation, is easily configured to take RCS measurements using the optional MI-3048 RCS Analysis Software.

      RCS measurements fall into two categories, evaluation and diagnosis.

        Evaluation consists of measuring the "whole body" RCS of a target at a particular frequency from various angles to determine how well a particular radar will see the target. This measurement normally is used to transmit a single frequency toward the target in order to sample the return. The target is rotated by one or more axes to determine which observation angle presents the highest return.   The goal of diagnosis is to obtain the returns caused by the targets' components (wings, fuselage, engines, etc.). With this information, an object's design can be changed to reduce its RCS signature. High-resolution images of the down range and cross range response of an object are required in order to perform diagnosis measurements. Here, the target is rotated as in evaluation measurement with the addition of being illuminated with a wideband signal at each aspect angle.  
               

      RCS measurements can be obtained in a variety of test configurations. MI Technologies has experience with compact ranges, outdoor far-field test ranges and indoor far-field anechoic chambers supplied with compact range equipment. While the type of facility used impacts the types of measurements that can be performed, MI Technologies has the experience and the technical know-how to design, install and operate the most efficient RCS facility to meet your needs.
